An Ode to the melting Snowman!

An Ode to the Melting Snowman!

To the melting snowman
Having his moment in the sun

Recalling his mute befriending conversations
With amber colored sun…

That waned over incandescent snow
Last winter

“I owe my birth to you..
For you invisibilized yourself for me,”

That was an ice-breaker

To the last visage of the melting snowman
Smiling over his ephemeral self…

Remembering his covenant with the sun
Emaciating gradually,

Waiting to be reborn!

In his crunchy eyes biting the dust,
Ever seen embers glowing within?

watching them go..

And he went away
the ragpicker

muttering..grumbling’

Picking discarded items
As he felt discarded himself

He smirked as he grumbled
Looked back and forth

Frantically looking everywhere
For his lost dignity

That had merged with the dust
which smeared his face

And she left the way
the child beggar

the vehicles zooming past her
Leaving her palms empty handed

“Palms that may receive a beating tonight”
She smiled as she left

Knowing her fate too well

And they too left..the spectators..

Watching them..
Shedding tears..

Of mercy

Having done their duty..

Thoughts and Pens

I want to write
Grabbing shreds
with papers flying
catching impulses
with pens running dry

Amidst
ebb and flow of forgetfulness
whether absorbing in mind
or in phone memory
or by typing dead letters
trying to make verse alive

Squeezing on paper
in the study
in front of the idiot box
in seclusion
or on streets

Flipping through magazines
incoherent words
far and between
begging for meanings
What to mean?
But why to mean?

Dylan or Linkin
Green day or Blue
My thoughts and pens are awry
Hail Falling pens
enough for now

I don't care
what I write
But I still want to write

Prank on nature

Unreal rain
Go away
The Rain
had warned about you

Your unnatural birth
threatens our lives
From silver iodide

Outrageous unreal rain
Go away
back to rockets
that triggered you

As you flicker
in broad sunshine
Don't mock the sun
Go away

What?
Furious?

Take pity
Let the shelter less make homes
let children play
let the seeds sprout
flowers breathe
cattle chew
And let us survive

Unreal,untimely rain
Go away

The snowy peaks
the flowered valleys
shudder as you arrive

Don't be proud
a momentary creation
delight of science

Oh! Mother Nature
Pardon the misadventure
This folly of human nature!!

The madhouse

The madhouse is calling
come on fellow souls
see its calling

Misanthropes of the world unite
you have nothing to lose
but your love
for mankind

Embrace the madhouse
there its calling!

Buck up you cynics
exhausted of exploitation
take a break
the madhouse is calling!

The sick, the poor,the ugly
victims of fancy judgements
don't be afraid
take solace in madhouse
yes its calling!

Beggars and The Fool
shall entertain
Hamlet and Herod
flaunt skills
look there
Our Bishen
stands with arms wide open

Rush
the madhouse is calling!

He who likes
to kill and pray
and pray and kill
shall knock the gates of Heaven
traversing the madhouse

Inmates unite
you have nothing to lose
but your love for each other
the madhouse is calling!

The Great Fall

Hail Liberty!

Flapping wings of Freedom?
or Flutter of dying breath?
Far and wide..
A gory crimson sky
shows a Dove withheld

Liberty Crucified!

Retributive justice
Turns trembling palms red
submerges the lifelines
the price of life

Prayers for peace
to die in peace
Untill the eyes open
to hear..
prayers drenched in war cries

Creed Crucified!

A Sojourn through Hell,
An Imagined glimpse of Heaven?
Earthly Path to Paradise
laid with nettles

Faith Crucified!

Bidding adieu to mankind
Shunning its dilapidated life,
the rattle of its pieces
Till someone beckons
To redeem Liberty.

"Carpe Diem"

Humans nurture a fear
Of Uncertainty
Its inevitability,
And vagueness in life.
Unpredictable, they say
And think it unbearable.
But Mortals can do nothing
Other than waiting...
Who knows, what lies ahead?
Pearls of joy may leave the thread
Replace it with stones
Of mischance.
Evanescence of life
Is the only way to permanence
An immunity from uncertainty
So rule till you have your reign.
Remember we are mortals
To be picked from our portals
To a place of Certainty
The ultimate "desert of Eternity..."

(M)an-Eater

In the frantic search
to devour
He turned to them,
And joined the gory fray,
Till the bones cracked
He ruminated...
The thirst was quenched
Sweet, sour
Bitter, bland
Salty, tasteless
A curious flood
Of odd temperament.
He still ruminated...
His turn came at last.
His own gluttonous tearing apart
by others.
"What had they become?"
The biggest fear
Of mankind
Unveiled before his dead eyes

Man turning upon himself to survive.
Did anyone hear
The legendary dialogue of self and soul?
I guess no more...

Winds of Change

The Winds of
Change have indeed begun to blow as the misty curtains of 2008 lifted and paved way for the not-so-chilly 2009. The winds of change pat our cheeks infusing unprecedented hope in our hearts, hope for a good present and a better future. Yes, the winds of change have come riding by on the wheels of Hope.

Hope knows no bounds and comes to everyone, at least that's our ordinary understanding. A hope that all hood winkers will surface (which has indeed happened in the corporate world), hope that politics will change its course of workings, hope that human deaths would be relatively 'natural' and not humiliatingly 'unnatural' (as opined and lamented by the protagonist of 'A Wednesday'), hope that Justice would no longer be denied (May the unfortunate ones rest in peace! Amen!), hope that Economy will revive and provide everything for everyone (though that's a dream rather distant for some), which reminds me of another hope that our very own Bollywood would continue to stir and shake our sensibilities with 'realistic' movies like 'Saas-bahu aur Sensex' (I hope I have put it correctly), and topping the list of hopes is the hope generated by Obama (not to be confused with Osama, whose capture still remains a hope for Bush), hope that he will change the world, even though I fail to understand why we always shoulder an individual with the responsibilities of the entire world. So as I see it, we are in a state of flux, Hope being our common lifeline, a lifeline that obviously comes free of cost.

Be it our sheer optimism or our inscrutable unscrupulousness, 'winds of change' phrase more than often, connotes a rather progressive meaning to us. Mundane promises made by our political leaders, with an occasional event here or there satiates us and makes us blind to our own follies. As 'Ignited Minds', we must not be blind to adverse winds, winds that instead of being fragrant Zephyr, turn out to be a cutting slap to our ever-nurturing hopes. To cite an example, (which has become pretty commonplace these days), we bade farewell to 2008 with terror and embraced the dawn of 2009 with another.

We expect these winds to be messengers of hope, but forget that Hope is fulfilled by responsibility. For many these hopeful winds have never blown. While we greet morning with a bright smile, for many it heralds another back-breaking, unrewarding and a frightful beginning. For a beggar on the street (who is least aware of the rules and laws made to contain terror or ameliorate his poor conditions), the rag pickers (who are most often children), filthy, murky streets, dwellings, breeding grounds of deadly diseases, communal undercurrents, for a peasant who accepts the clutches of moneylenders as his fate, for a girl child whose 'destiny' kicks her out before being born etc etc...One can see that cynicism breeds easily and rules longer than hope.

Obama's three words have been doing wonder these days. I would like to conclude by using these three words- words that denote hope with a sense of responsibility. These three words, standing for all-inclusivity, transcending socio-economic, political and cultural boundaries, embody not just a political change in one part of the world, but a way of life that all of us need to internalize. "Yes We Can", lets make the Winds of Change, change for the better, always.

God's 'Pandaemonium'

( Revisiting Hell...)

Wealth on Streets
Stared at,by,
Uncovered bodies
begging alongside.

Garlands of skulls
And wreaths to follow
Accessorizing lifestyle.

Gardens where plants drip red
Irrigated by fresh blood
Yielding nectar of sorrow.

Plush locomotive on streets
Colliding with rickety transport
Flood of abuses.

Dried rivers, alongside
Ponds of bloody spit
We drinking our own tears.

Human-dog ruckus
Fight over food
Animals win.

Foetus nurtured in Garbage
Growing up to avenge
And be called a traitor.

This is Satan's workshop,
Renovated by 'God'.

The Devil has moved out,
But God remains
Celebrating 'Evil'.

(Un)Mute

(It takes one move to overturn things!)

Time(s) immemorial

Are Spectators to her silence
Borne by her patiently.
Her voiceless voice nurtured
And moulded
To match his loquacity.

Fearing his tongue lash
She muted herself
Far beneath 'Echo'
To please his (wounded) Narcissism.

Until one day,

The 'Laugh of Medusa'
Drained off the scream out of him.

Torn

The Fire Of Troy, c late 16th c. (Fotosearch)

When a gaze
pierces more than spears,
Gory chapters
ink pages of history
'Bloods' change their course
Armours reveal faces,
that betray feeling faces
A Troy is a spectacle
A mockery of life itself
He looks down,
and laments
Cries that reach above.

Come Away With Me!

Yonder there beyond the mystique hills

Underneath the misty layers
An edifice stands beaming
With Climbers gyrating around

Cocooned in boulders
Bubbles of life throb within
Embodying joys and sorrows together
Emanating a rhythm

The grass blades are manicured
The wet mud is soporific
Trees skylark to shower
Their rejuvenating blessings

Where else on Earth lies
The abode of dainty darlings
Their musings, peals of laughter
Accompanied by chirpy twittering?

The light of life is young
Enlightens our tender years
Such experiences too float by
To nurture us into matured bearers

And finally, the abode is Heavenly
A Home away from Home
Reverentially and Lovingly,
Christened 'Geetanjali'.

On the brink!

The last minute arrived
Explosive and fatal to life.
Prayers and chants
Enveloped the air.

On the brink of death,
He confessed.

His wait was over!
But... no explosion?
In the deafening silence
His question remained...

Vision

The cold wave swept her off
Lifted her like a weightless form
She crossed over oceans
Of glistening melodious drops

Pines pricked her
Leaves rustled her soul
Piercing through the foliage
A new world she saw.

Cornucopia!

Human forms, but unlike us
Animal forms, and like us.
White clad damsels
Basking in crimson hue

Symphonic lute
Teasing the breeze
Amidst incandescent
Flowery alleys

Rocks draped in cascades
Exotic fumes taking a dive
Bliss of eternal light
And luminous nights

Bees plump with nectar
Humming around hymns
To her, strange,
Alien yet soothing

Sparkling voyeuristic gaze
Match her conscious eyes
Each glance hugs her
She kisses back the mediating air

She lets herself groove
Upon the airy lyre
When...

The rocking chair jolted her
Down it went with weight
As the door flung open wide
Dark silence stood uninvited

The opium attack
Was too hard to bear
Hush, hush...said silence.

The Devil's Advocate (A short story)

They say it is not my forte. But what is my forte anyway? A string of neatly measured letters or a sporadic out pour of words, resulting from a tumorous growth of vague ideas? Brooding over these, with eyes fixed upon the eaves outside, I slowly dissolved into the unconscious realm until the eaves melted in my vision. My eyes were just about to droop when a loud noise broke the peal of silence. An all- engulfing smoke skyrocketed as if to stir the deafness of Heaven. Its satanic aura intimidated to deaden, for perhaps years to come. My eyes opened to discover the eaves no longer there. The explosion sent tremors down my spinal column.

"These people serve stories, juicy stuff to be swallowed easily," the old man blurted out, frantically balancing himself, yet so unmoved. His tea spilled over him along with the biscuit crumbs as he swallowed the newspaper article, that was soon to become a tool to kill flies. His senile mind functioned almost mechanically. He castigated the article, oblivious of the hours spent in gathering the ingredients of the delicacy. This dish tasted of the never ending problems of society, radical students reading 'Mein Kampf', the defiance of home makers amidst all their drudgery, the paunch-carrying khadi clad law makers (or breakers is it?), the misery of suicide-bombers and their deadly bicycles, et al. All this was certainly not meant to be taken with a grain of salt.

Miles away, was heard "God is great."

My rented house was clearly under attack. The curtain over the violent drama pulled down as the dramatis personae revealed itself; perpetually annoyed caretakers of the society. Each bead of sweat and horror shimmering on my face made them euphoric. This was the fatal cost of the tumult in my mind and the subsequent itch in my fingers.

"This is all we get from sheltering you writers", the old man's response shook me more. His questioning eyes, sunken under the weight of his years, now appeared resigned to fate. People attributed it to the loss of his only son, something that had brought more shock than distress, for he blew himself up in the name of religion and nation. It was an inexplicable sacrifice. His pondering over the 'why and how' of things had squeezed all energy out of him. His physical immobility complemented his voluntary mental numbing, making himself all together inaccessible to scorn and disrepute. The can of worms had reopened today and I could see the glint of horror in his eyes. My article had stirred the hornet's nest as I eulogized his son for no clear reason. I had attempted to disclose his son's heart, that was tampered with, to such an extent that it had ceased to be a human heart at all. The revelations had dismantled the order and this attack was a means to bring it back. Unable to withstand the dilemma, the father had placed himself in, I vacated.

What was it that angered them? A localised clan of self-styled law makers, a bunch of hot headed men, as much the victims as the culprits. The gender of the author infuriated them? Or was it the warmth the article diffused for the controversial? Was it subversive? Did it subvert the nationalist sentiment? Was it a combination of all? The act of thinking was subversive enough. They reiterated it was not my forte.
But my cancerous ideas refuse to be contained and sneak out of the defined, relegated threshold. They take it as an act of sabotage.

Weeks have passed and no one has been hooked, no probes made and no one's curiosity is impatient enough to break out. The eaves have been rebuilt, a couple has moved in my place, docile, not much aspiring and staunch believers in destiny. The old man continues to gaze incessantly as usual, at the horizon, waiting for the sun to set; his outward calm existence in sharp contrast to his inward grief.
My self-imposed exile has taken me to remote corners, from where I continue to send ripples. They still complain, it is not my forte.

Catharsis

This moment is a dew
Fresh, sparkling alive
Yet brief in life

Its in amity
With my watery eyes
Trickling down fearfully
Pricking like nettles

Each tear a prism
Refracting tales of its own
Hoping to seize (or cease)
The dew

Their interplay
The time mocks at
"I am in fetters"
Creating a stagnant pool

The Dew in a disguise?

I know not what to feel
what to write
The coagulated pool waits
For me to take a dive

So, is a choked throat
Better than watery eyes?
Alas! Only time can tell
When it moves.

Shadow

One and One
make one.
Our riddle exists with us.
Its vision unseen, unheeded
Its exuding voice unheard.
A pensive gaze lives along,
Indivisible, inseparable, invisible
Gyrating around the visible.
Our selfless self,
Soulful soul
The nectar of life.

But who evolves?
Life or its shadow?

Timeless

Today is gone
I have erased it all
And continue to do so
As each day passes by

Time knows my folly
And brings a tomorrow again
To heap up
Another trash

The stains of past
Confront
The present strains
Who rules the roost?

Until future shows the face
And becomes the present.
